Question

Photoshop missing layers

Good afternoon, 2 years ago I made a photo with 96 layers and 1 photo in each layer. I thought I saved a version with all layers visible and named. I have to adjust a number of layers and when I now open the latest version there is only 1 (merged) layer known, the background layer. Is there a way to get the layers back (the history is empty)?

Thanks Greg

Stephen Marsh's question is crucial. If you saved as JPG or any of the other file formats that don't support layers, the file would be flattened to a 'Background'.

It was saved as a .psd file.

Could that layer be a Smart Object?  If the thumbnail has an icon in its lower right coorner as below, then double click the thumbnail which open it in a new window showing all of its contained layers.  My fingers are crossed for you.

Sorry, no smart object. Maybe the command "merge layers" or "make 1 layer" was executed.

@Gregorius95 this might be a far-out chance, but did you do another search for the file for a different version? Maybe a duplicate saved on the cloud?

@Gregorius95

What is the file format? Only a limited set of formats support saving layers.

@Gregorius95 sound like the file is corrupt, I don't think there's much you can do in this case, history is not saved when the file is closed
