photoshop ram usage out of control

un the last week photoshop has been acting up; no matter my preferences it uses too much ram, opening photoshop with no file uses 7 gb of ram, opening 1 160 mb file uses 9 and 2 160 mb files uses 12 gb of ram (my limit is set to 8).

the app crashes every 10/15 mins because of this, i updated ps, tried to uninstall and reinstall and even bought a new ssd and did a clean install of windows.  i need to use it for a project due in a week and cant, im screwed

The other settings that are new are:

Go to Preferences > Performance... and uncheck both Multithreaded Compositing  and GPU Compositing - then restart Photoshop. Does the problem still occur?

It is normally recommended that memory usage should be set (under the Performance tab) at 70%.

i reset the preference now when i open ps alone it uses about 2 gb of ram, but opening the 2 files brings me back to 12 gb, i dont get it because the same files on an older version of ps on the pc i use at school use 1/2 gb of ram

Reset the preferences under the General tab in Photoshop preferences (this is different from reinstalling).

im using windows 10 and the last update of ps, my sistem has 16 gbof ram total and i just installed a 500 gb m.2 ssd that has 350 gb free space.

i already tried trashing preferences when i uninstalled and reinstalled the app but it seems that was not the problem.

Which version of Photoshop and OS?
How much RAM and spare hard disk capacity do you have on your system?

Have you tried trashing the Photoshop preferences?
