Photoshop / Save: How can I always overwrite the opened file with just one keyboard shortcut?

Dear community,

since a few versions Photoshop added a (for me really annoying) feature which requires me to always save an image to a compatible file. As soon as I have more than one layer I cannot just press CTRL+S to overwrite the (png/jpg) file I'm editing because Photoshop always asks me to save a PSD file. For testing during development and several other cases I really dislike this feature. (While I understand the reason for this feature in mose usecases)

That's why I'm asking:

How can I simply always overwrite the file I opened with just one keyboard shortcut?

Do you want to be able to save as a JPG (for instance) but keep all of the layers?  I wonder if you can step backwards through history in an Action?  Something like Flatten, save, undo the Flatten.  It usually works out that when you save within an action, when you later run the action it will save to the same location, which is not very helpful.  So lets wait and see what responses you get.
