Photoshop takes 5 minutes to open

I've been having this issue for a while now where from time to time photoshop takes about 5 minutes to open. Most of the time it's fine, however. Not only that but my photoshop just runs worse than I ever remember. I have a great computer so I shouldn't be having any issues. I've tried everything I can find online, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

It sounds really annoying, especially if you have a good computer. Have you tried resetting Photoshop settings or checking if a plugin is causing the problems? This may help.

I just posted a reply which disappeared. Anyway, remove a folder called Automate from within the plug-in folder of the 64-bit Photoshop (12.0.4) and now Photoshop loads fine in under seconds.

I had the same problem, on a brand new Dell Pro Tower PC. Evenetually I removed a folder called "Automate" from inside the plug-in folder of the 64-bit Photoshop 12.0.4. which instantly fixed this issue. There were 3 filed in the "Automate" folder at least some of whic is probably corrupt.

Thanks for the tip! I ended up doing a clean reinstall of Windows 11 and it has been three days now without seeing the problem. It does have a habit of coming back when I least expect it, however, and if it does I will try what you did next!

Photoshop launches as a background process instead of an app, I have to wait 5 - 10 minutes for it to flash the splash screen and start up as an app. When inspecting the details in task manager while waiting I can see Photoshops wait chain is waiting on 2 svchost.exe processes, once it finally starts though these 2 clear from the list and it says Photoshop.exe is running normally.

Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling creative cloud and photoshop, used the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool and the creative cloud uninstaller.

I've tried reseting the preferences to the default setting by deleting the AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2025\Adobe Photoshop 2025 Settings folder

Tried reinstalling my drivers to the latest and tried switching between game and studio drivers. Tried going into %appdata% > Local\Adobe\OOBE and deleting the opm.db file, logging out and relaunching creativecloud.

I've tried deleting and reinstalling all my Microsoft Visual C++ versions. (Was able to delete all but 2 and tried to run fresh installers for the 32bit and 64bit packages for them but get a reboot needed message that stays after rebooting so just left it as the 2 up to date versions that were there already)

My last resort is a complete windows reinstall but I want to avoid that if I can

Finally fixed it by deleting all registry folders titled Adobe in the locations in the registry below and deleted all remaining folders in the program and user folders AFTER using the Creative Cloud Uninstaller & Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool, restarted my computer. Photoshop now opens instantly every time!

Would be nice if Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool and the Creative Cloud Uninstaller cleared all these instead of leaving them lurking in the system for users to have to track down and purge manually if they corrupt.

Manual Registry Cleanup (Use with caution):
Disclaimer: Modifying the registry can cause system instability. Back up your registry before making any changes.

1. Open Registry Editor: Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.

2. Back up the registry: Click File > Export to save a backup of your entire registry.

3. Locate and delete keys:

Navigate to and carefully delete any remaining Photoshop-related keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Adobe\\Photoshop
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Adobe\\Photoshop

4. Search for and delete any other specific registry keys related to Photoshop.

5. Restart your computer: to ensure all changes are applied.

6. Clean up leftover folders: in the AppData directories to remove settings and caches.

7. Install a fresh copy of Creative Cloud and install/run photoshop

Look at the splash screen, it lists sub-modules as they load. See if it hangs at a particular place in the loading sequence.

@D Fosse He stated he's not getting the splash screen at all which in itself is odd. @Callum27512732dcky you really didnt mention specifics that you've tried - have you reset your preferences? If not I'd start there. If no change then uninstall and fully reinstall the app. After you reinstall do not change any settings/preferences to confirm it starts up ok. If it does, then you can begin changing settings 1 by 1 restarting after each to see if a setting change caused the issue.

At first glance besides @AxelMatt suggestion on the GPU driver, RAM is set to 80% which tells me some settings in performance were adjusted.

If none of this works, or you've tried this already - I would uninstall and install the previous build using the CC Desktop app and see if the performance improves or is related to the current release.

With this driver version I already had different problems on my machine; but not in Photoshop.

Please goto NVidia's website an take a look after the recent version of the device driver for your graphic card.

Make sure that you download and install the recent Studio version (not the Game Ready version !!!). Then check.

If this doesn't help go back to driver version 576.52 (already the Studio version). This version is working for me without any issues.

This is really killing my ability to get work done. Seriously think I've tried everything adobe recommends and nothing works. Unlike other people, when I try to open photoshop instead of the splash screen coming up, it is just in the background. There's no indicator I even tried to open photoshop except it being in my task manager. Then after a couple of minutes the splash screen pops up and it opens like normal. Can anyone please help me?
