Photoshop Timeline not enough ram error

Hello!

I have used Photoshop to animate for three or so years using the timeline window and video layers mostly. In the past year or so I have been encountering an issue where Photoshop uses more and more RAM anytime I do anything until eventually it has allocated all the RAM I set available to it ~12gb (I have 24 in my system). Photoshop then gives me the error "Photoshop could not use brush tool because not enough memory (RAM)" or something like that. Then either just Photoshop crashes or my whole computer crashes. Usually, by this point, ~70% of my total system memory is being used.

 

I also noticed that the efficiency of the project stays at 100% and never uses any of my scratch disks, or at least that's what I think 100% efficiency means. I have 400GB of available space in my HDD scratch disk and I tried using another scratch disk.

 

This problem makes it pretty much impossible for me to animate in Photoshop because Photoshop crashes after about 10 minutes of use every time I use it to animate!

I use a cheap Huion drawing tablet while using Photoshop as well.

    @Rigmore why are you doing a video timeline for hand drawn animation instead of Frame animation?


    Better workflow. I fixed my problem! I had to click the Older GPU mode (pre-2016) button. Maybe this means I needed to update my video drivers. Thanks for your help!

    Hi @Rigmore first check your image size and make sure you have the proper units of measure. Most times this error comes up because someone set inches instead of px and the canvas was too large.

    If that is not the case, send what your image size is in px, then go to Photoshop Help Menu/System Info and copy/paste details in a reply. Post only once as the system takes time to process the large amount of data.

    I did have my project set in inches at 10x10 with 150 pixels per inch. I changed it to pixels and lowered the resolution to 1000x1000. I tried to animate and Photoshop crashed. I restarted my system and animated until my overall RAM usage got to 72% with only Task Manager and Photoshop running and this is my system info.

    @Rigmore go to preferences/performance and increase your PS memory allocation to 72% (default). Normally when I see anything under 70 (unless you manually changed it) it makes me question the RAM integrity.

    That aside - I would also update your GPU drivers they are 6 mo out of date. Not that it should fix, but always a good idea.

    How are you animating? Are you converting a video file or importing frames? Starting from scratch?
