Photoshop WebP Images Lose Color Accuracy After Save (ICC Profile Issue)

Hi Adobe Team,

I’m facing a color accuracy issue in Photoshop when working with WebP images, and this problem appears to be consistent across multiple projects.

Problem Description

When I open a WebP image in Photoshop, the colors look correct initially. However, after making minor edits (even without changing color settings) and exporting/saving the file again as WebP or PNG, the final image looks washed out or slightly faded compared to the original.

This issue becomes more noticeable on web browsers, especially Chrome, and mobile devices.

Steps to Reproduce

Open a WebP image in Photoshop

  1. Do a small edit (crop, resize, or text overlay)

  2. Export the image as WebP or PNG

  3. Compare the exported image with the original in a browser

Expected Result

Colors should remain consistent before and after export.

Actual Result

Colors appear dull or desaturated, especially skin tones and brand colors.

Additional Observations

  • The issue seems related to ICC color profile handling

  • Happens more often when “Convert to sRGB” is enabled

  • PNG exports sometimes behave better than WebP, but the issue is still noticeable

Why This Is a Problem

I manage an eCommerce website where product images must stay color-accurate for branding and customer trust.
This issue directly affects the product visuals on my website.

Incorrect colors create confusion for customers and increase return requests.

System Information

  • Photoshop Version: Latest (Creative Cloud)

  • OS: Windows 10 / Windows 11

  • Export Format: WebP / PNG

  • Color Space: sRGB

I’d appreciate it if the team could confirm whether this is a known issue and if a fix or workaround is planned.

Thank you.

AFAIK, WebP is only available via Save/Save As/Save a Copy - not via Export As/Quick Export or Save for Web (Legacy). So you'll need to ensure that the include ICC profile checkbox is active.

If you need to batch convert files to WebP,  you can use my script:

While this one is designed to save artboards to WebP:

Adding a real-world example for context:

I’m experiencing this issue while preparing product images for my Gaming website.
Color shifts are especially noticeable on product photos after exporting from Photoshop.

Accurate colors are crucial for product representation and user trust, so this behavior makes WebP exports unreliable.

Hi @Caroline_Harper6259! Thank you for reaching out! I'm sorry to hear about your issue. Unfortunately, I was unable to reproduce this issue using the exact same steps from my Windows machine. Could you please share a proper screen recording (not from a camera) of your entire workflow, including the steps that lead up to the issue, so that we can take a closer look at the situation? You can share it via Google Drive, WeTransfer, or another public file-sharing platform.

In the meantime, here are a few things you can check/try to see if they make a difference:

1) Before you edit: Go to Edit > Color Settings and set your Working Space for RGB to sRGB IEC61966-2.1. Also, Set Color Management Policies to Preserve Embedded Profiles.

2) When using Export as, make sure these two checkboxes are ticked: Convert to sRGB and Embed Color Profile.

3) Try with "Save for Web (Legacy)" for Better Control: Go to File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy).

-Ensure Preview: Monitor Color is selected.

-Check Convert to sRGB and Embed Color Profile.

4) Ensure you are working in 8-bit mode (Image > Mode > 8 Bits/Channel).

Let us know how it goes!

Thanks, this helps a lot. I’ll test the sRGB vs Display P3 export
and report back if the issue persists across browsers.
