PNG on Smart objects not working

I'm getting a 500 error message when trying to generate an image after updating a smart object with a png file.

What have you done for all-purpose trouble-shooting so far?
Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:

Did you »Replace Contents« and select the png or did you place the png, open and edit it, …?
