I'm trying to set my optimal preferences but there are a few things in there that I"m not sure what they mean. My number 1 question is what does it mean by column size and what is the gutter? Mine seem to be set on points with the width being 180 and the gutter being 12. I have no idea if I should be using points vs pixels vs inches, etc and I have no idea what column and gutter are referring to.

You would normally (though not exclusively) work in pixels in Photoshop and in InDesign you would use mm or inches for page dimensions and points for type. Again you would not normally work in columns in Photoshop but you might in InDesign.

To summarise you optimise (color correct, crop, size etc) your images in Photoshop and - if you want to produce publications - you use InDesign, where you add your images from Photoshop and add the text.

Thank you for that. That actually helped me with a few questions I had!

Gutter is the amount of space between columns.

The preference setting for column size can be handy if you are planning to import an image into a page layout program, like InDesign, and want to make sure that the image fits the exact width of the columns you are using in the page layout program.

Using the View > New Guide Layout command, you can set up guides that match the width of the layout you are planning to use.
