Print problems after update to Mac OS Big Sur 11.6.2

After the latest update from Mac OS Big Sur to version 11.6.2, I encounter a strange printing problem when sending an image from Photoshop to the Epson PSC 700 printer. If I select "Photoshop manages colours", the printer dialogue box won't open and the file won't print. If I select Printer manages colours the file will print, but the colours are off.

I've already uninstalled and deleted all printer stuff and installed the driver again and made sure not ot select the airprint version. I've also installed Photoshop again and did a reset of the preferences. Nothing solved the problem. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this weird problem and found a solution.

I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance!

Good news,  after the update to Big Sur 11.6.5 the issue is finally resolved (hope it will not come back at the next update).

After the update to 11..6.5, I delete my Epson 3880 from the printer list and re-install the printer driver then add the printer in the printer list again. All the profile come back like before in Lightromm and photoshop.

A reminder Apple won't fix this if they don't get enough pressure to acknowledge it. Please submit a bug report using the feedback.app in OSX.  I've filed a report the number is "FB9827649" make sure to mention it in your report so they can see it's more than you and post your report numver for others to use.

@rockpowered I did file a report with Apple and mentioned the number of your report. I didn't get a feedback number yet though. I'll mention it here as soon as get one. Let's hope it helps. This indeed seems more of an Apple problem than an Adobe problem.

And now you wait, it took almost a week until they reported back that they were unable to dignose with current information. Lets hope something happens.

Hi, after having struggled with this issue for a couple of weeks and spending a lot of my spare time on it, I decided on a rather drastic solution. I don't want to upgrade to Monterey for a couple of reasons, so I bought a second hand laptop with Windows 10 and in one evening all necessary programmes were installed and printing with ICC profiles works just fine again. Luckily the Adobe CC suit can be installed on two different devices, regardless of the operating system. It feels strange though to have to switch to Windows to solve my problems. Many years ago it was the other way round.

Thanks for your update. I worked in the PC/Windows environment for many years. As good as it is, I don’t want to go back. It is clear I have a bit of a long road ahead of me, but I’m going to work it out, somehow. I guess it is the engineer in me…I just can’t let let go of a problem. Sometimes that is a terrible affliction. Maybe this is one of those times 🙂

Keep me posted. I'd love to hear when you find a solution or workaround for the problem. For now I'll work with both operating systems, which isn't a problem for I've been working with both for a long time.

Hi, Jack here.

I'm somewhat relieved to see that I'm not the only one with this problem.  The reason I'm relieved is that it proves I'm not going crazy.

I've done everything from uninstalling and reinstalling the Epson Driver package and Adobe Photoshop, to RESTORING Big Sur.  All to no avail.

I had a session with Apple yesterday and I don't think I got the brightest spark on the block.  When I questioned him, he didn't have a clue about Photoshop, print drivers, or how the print file system is organised.  I too noticed that it was the Big Sur update sometime in November 2021 where everything went bad.  At that time I was using an Epson 3880 and had been for years, with absolutely no ICC profile problems.  Ever since then printing has been a disaster.  My 3880 was pretty worn out and I was planning on getting a P900 Espon, so I thought I would go for it in December 2021, only to find exactly the same problem.

In my discussions with the Apple 'expert' (ha) last night he said my last option was to wipe the disc and reinstall the opeating system.  I've done that once before and it created a ton of resetting of preferences and losing access to some older data.  I won't do that again.  My computer is a 2015(late) iMac and I prefer not to go to Monterey for fear it will make it slower than it already is, so I want to stick with Big Sur for now.

My plan is to try Apple again, only this time I'm not going to be so subservient to their wishes.  I will question the 'Senior Advisor' I get, and if he/she doesn't know squat about printing, like the last guy I talked to, then I'll push back and ask for someone else.  I'll do the same with Adobe and Epson as well.  I'll tackle Adobe and Epson next week.

I must have put over 15 hours into this problem so far, with absolutely no results.  I should mention, I have tried my other ICC profiles for MOAB paper and Ilford paper and they won't work either; however, the profiles for Red River paper do work.  That makes no sense to me at all.  Maybe I'll call Red River and ask what they did.

One last point.....I tried printing via the Apple Colorsync application and it couldn't find the right profiles either.

Maybe this is how class action law suits get started.  (Just joking, but it shows how frustrated I am with this issue.)

Thanks for the link, Neil! I checked it out. Seems more and more people are reporting printing problems after the Big Sur 11.6.2 upgrade. Perhaps upgrading to Mac OS Monterey will solve the issue. So it seems after reading some of the reactions. Downgrading to BS 11.6.1 wasn't possible.

I'm going to suggest people submit a a bug report (feedback app) on specifically Mention Big Sur 11.6.2 and colorsync and icc profiles. I did that and I saw that zero people had reported the proble. Light a fire under Apple to correct this. I can't update to Montogomery as my machine is not eligble and I'm sure many are in the same boat.

Update of my quest to get printing with specific color profiles work again:

I reinstalled Big Sur 11.6.2 to make sure there had not been an issue with the first update. Strange detail: usually the current version of the OS can be reinstalled in recovery mode. Now the only choice was the next version: Monterey. So I had to  reinstall using a bootable device with Big Sur on it.

After that I reinstalled the latest Epson PSC700 printer driver.

My Epson printer specific ICC profiles were not available in the Library under Colorsync/ profiles. Previous to Big Sur version 11.6.2 I used the method Conrad Chavez describes in his blog to make sure Colorsync can find and use the profiles. Conrad Chavez updated his blogpost to mention this method no longer works after the upgrade to Big Sur 11.6.2. I tried and it did not work. I can see the ICC profiles in Photoshop, but not use them. The same issue as in my initial post. So I'm back to square one. Still I'll add the link to the blogpost so you can check it for new updates.

Download the latest driver for your printer

Use Adobe Bridge to Sync the color settings between all your apps.

Adobe Bridge

Edit >> Color Settings

If colors are not synced shoose which worklfow you want. If they are synced you are good.

I am using the latest driver and even removed it and re-installed. Same issue as before.

I just double checked and my Bridge Color settings are all in sync.

I think this is an Apple OS upgrade issue that is causing issues in Photoshop's Color Managed workflow.

I have the same issue with my Epson 3880 since the Big Sur update 11.6.2

There was a security change in CorlorSync with the update to Mac Os 11.6.2.

Maybe this is why some of the profiles are not used by Colorsync anymore.

ColorSync

Available for: macOS Big Sur

Impact: Processing a maliciously crafted image may lead to arbitrary code execution

Description: A memory corruption issue in the processing of ICC profiles was addressed with improved input validation.

CVE-2021-30942: Mateusz Jurczyk of Google Project Zero

@Michael Lenticular  Thank you so much, Michael! Setting the colour profile in the Epson printer driver dialog box is sure worth a try. I'll try it with the next print. But I hope with you this issue gets solved soon. I feels like having to go around the block to arrive next door.

I found a workaround that works relatively well for B&W images. I now use the Epson Print Layout utility which lets me choose the paper profiles provided by Epson. I choose the setting closest to the paper I use. The quality is acceptable, but not what it used to be. There is no possibility for colourmanagement however, so that issue still isn't solved. It seems colourmanagement doesn't work at all. There is no change in colours whatever profile I choose. This used to work fine before the last Mac OS Big Sur Update.

I found a work around that does work with color files - manage color in the Epson driver instead of the Photoshop print dialog. In the Epson driver select ColorSync and your custom profile. Hopefully Apple & Adobe can get this fixed.

I have the exact same problem although I'm using an Epson 4900. I can print from Affinty Photo and Microsoft Word just fine, but not from Photoshop. Like you I deleted and reloaded both Photoshop and the Epson driver. I found a "band aid" work around, but not a solution. In the Photoshop Print Settings Dialog Box, pick Printer Manages Color. Then hit the print button. In Print settings, under Color Matching, choose ColorSync. In that same window, use the drop down to choose your profile.

I'm not sure if this is an Apple, Adobe, or Epson issue, but something has changed with the last OS update.
