Question

Printer handles colors by default

Each time a print from Photoshop 27.2.1 the alternative "Printer handles colors" shows up and I have to swith to "Photoshop handles colors" manually everytime. This is irritating and slows down the workflow. In earlier versions of Photoshop I could change this once, and it took effect permanently. How do I change this setting in the current version?

In the "Print Settings" window, how can I set default values for all new documents?

I want the value of Color Handling to always be "Photoshop Manages Colors". But every time I create a new document, the values of the Print Dialog are reset to other default values (ie: "Printer Manages Colors").

I'm using a fresh Photoshop install (27.2.0) on a fresh Windows 11 install.

I don't have an older version of Photoshop to validate but I feel like this behavior was different in the past. I remember changin the value of Color Handling once after installing Photoshop and never had to touch it again.

It also looks like Photoshop is now remembering the state of the "Print Settings" window on a per-document basis which, I'm pretty sure, wasn't the case before. This makes me believe that Adobe did actually make changes to this feature but I unfortunately haven't able to find any detailed release changelogs that would confirm this suspicion nor the expected behavior for these changes...

@chrgue you nailed it! Yes, the older versions remembered the last settings; the newer versions are per document. I don't hink there is a setting in the preferences to force a global default colour handling. If you are using Photoshop at the same size and resolution, you could create a template and set that up as one-time deal. And when you click on the template, that setting would be all ready to go. But, if you are like most people, chances are you will have different document sizes!?!

I wonder if a Photoshop Action with 'File - Print, set everything exactly how you want it, and click Print.' And when you hit the play Action, it will bypass the manual setup and send the file to the printer with 'Photoshop Manages Colours' every time.

Thanks for confirmation and the actions idea! I took a quick look at actions and it looks like it is indeed possible to record the state of the Print Settings window (when recording the action, close the Print Settings window with the "Done" button instead of "Cancel" or "Print").

In my case I still want to open that window before printing (to adjust values in the printer driver window) but I could theoretically run this action as an initial setup everytime I create a new document. Ultimately, I don't think I'll end up going that route because it's still something that needs to be done manually for every document and I might as well just get used to validating the print settings instead (which I'm already getting used to after wasting a couple of prints assuming the settings had not changed 😅...)

The template idea is interesting but, like you said, I generally have files with varying sizes and couldn't have a single template for everything. In my workflow, the majority of PSD files are also create outside of Photoshop which prevents the possibiliy of using templates (developped RAW photos exported as PSD files from Capture One).

In order to properly adapt our workflows, and because we don't have access to detailed changelogs for every Photoshop version, it would be great to at least get confirmation from Adobe:

  • That they have indeed made changes around this feature and that it is the expected behavior? (i.e. that Printer Settings are reset to factory defaults on every new document)
  • If they have planned to implement a way to define default values for the Printer Settings window or allow the Printer Settings window to remember previously used values?

Hey, @perg5178982. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll help you figure this out.

Try this:

1 - Remove & reinstall the Printer drivers, set it up as a wired & primary Printer for your machine.
2 - Press & hold the Space key & go to File > Print to reset Photoshop's print dialogue specifically.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks!

Hi @Sameer K
I did this but it did not help. When I open a file that previously has been
printed with the option "Photoshop handles colors" everything is fine, but
when I print a file for trhe first time Photoshop always says " Printer
handles colors". In a previous versions of Photoshop it worked fine also
for new files, that is this setting was stored within photoshop and not
with the specific file which is the case today.

Thanks for sharing this update. Could you share the exact version of Photoshop where the dialog remembers the last used parameters instead of the default?

Thanks!
