problem saving large files in PS

Using Windows 10 and PS 25.9.1.  File seems to become unsually large after adding a few layers, hangs up saving at 99% and PS closes.  Upon opening PS again, the Recovered file is there, but cannot be saved, goes to 99% and then PS shuts down.
