Problem with Smart Object using Camera Raw

I am working on  some night images of the Milky Way.  When I change a layer to a Smart Object then go to Camera Raw to make changes, the result comes back not looking like the image as modified when in camera raw.  Specifically, the much lower saturated image in CR comes back looking like only 50% or so of the change made it back to the PS layer.  I have the latest PS  and Camera Raw versions installed, use windows 11.
