Problems with Gen Fill and solid backgrounds

If I'm editing a portrait and want to change the background to black, I tell Gen Fill/Firefly 3 'Dark, solid, even black background,' it often produces a bright sunny landscape or even a white background! Sometimes it's just a mixed up bright pattern. What gives? Any suggestions? Seems like this should be simple...
