Subject: "Program Error" specifically with Remove Tool on Mac Studio M2 Max (but Neural Filters work)

Hi everyone,

I’m facing a persistent "Program Error" in Photoshop (v27.6.0) on my Mac Studio (M2 Max, 64GB RAM). The error occurs every time I use the Remove Tool (or any Replace operation) the moment I release the mouse button.

The strange part:

  • The Neural Filters work perfectly and can be downloaded/applied without issues.
  • The same Photoshop version works flawlessly on my MacBook Air M4.
  • The error on the Mac Studio happens even on a new, empty 8-bit RGB document.

What I have already tried:

  • Complete Clean Install: Used the Adobe CC Cleaner Tool, reinstalled on the internal Macintosh HD (it was previously on an external SSD).
  • Preferences: Reset on launch; toggled "Stable" vs. "Faster" processing in Image Processing.
  • GPU Settings: Deactivated "Use Graphics Processor"; tried "Basic" mode; disabled OpenCL.
  • Folders: I noticed that ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/UXP/PluginsStorage/PHSP/27/Internal/com.adobe.photoshop.remove-tool and Web-Resources folders are missing on the Mac Studio, even though they exist on the MacBook Air.
  • Permissions: Granted Full Disk Access; repaired permissions for /Users/Shared/Adobe.
  • OS: No antivirus or cleaning software installed; not running in Rosetta mode.

Since the Neural Filters are working, it seems the AI infrastructure is okay, but there is a specific breakdown between the Remove Tool's engine and the M2 Max GPU/Metal framework.

Has anyone seen this specific "split" behavior where some AI features work while the Remove Tool triggers a Program Error? Any advice on how to force-trigger the download of the missing Remove Tool components?

Thanks in advance!

Hey, @MIKE HILLEBRAND. Thanks for the detailed post. I've moved your post away from the year-old thread. I’ve been unable to recreate this on my test machine.

Please share a video of the issue and the system info from Photoshop Help > System Info. Copy and paste it into a text document, then upload and attach it here. Does this happen with any specific layers or layer structure? Steps that result in this would help, too.

    Thanks!
