Question for the Photoshop Community: Handling Large PSD Files

I’ve been running into an issue with large PSD files (1GB+). Even with a decent machine (32GB RAM, SSD, dedicated GPU), Photoshop starts lagging after multiple smart objects + adjustment layers.

I’ve tried:

  • Converting layers to smart objects

  • Linked vs embedded smart objects

  • Increasing cache levels & scratch disk space

  • Disabling GPU acceleration

Still facing slowdowns after a while.

My questions for the community:

  • How do you optimize performance when working with large, complex PSDs?

  • Are there “best practices” for managing smart objects, adjustment layers, or linked assets in big projects?

  • Any hidden tips/tricks for speeding up workflows at scale?

Would love to hear how other pros handle heavy Photoshop projects without constant lag or crashes.

I've had occasions when a particular document became very slow.  They would typically be around 4000 x 3000 pixels, 100 plus layers and lots of smart objects.  Restarting Photoshop and the computer would not help, nor would resetting preferences.  Then they would suddenly speed up back to normal for no apparent reason.

You should follow @D Fosse advice. Look sat the root directory of your primary scratch drive, for Photoshop Temp files.

Hmmm...  Just noticed your iPad and Web tags, which obviously changes everything.  So are you editing very large document on an iPad using Photoshop web version?  I have zero experience, although I do have Photoshop on an iPad Pro.  It would not even ocurr to me to try working on very large documents on an iPad.

The single most important thing is to have enough scratch disk space - and not too many history states, which eats up disk space really fast. How much do you have, and how many history states?
