Question

Remove Tool bug removing outside brushed area

Ver. 26.11 (Mac)

Preference: Image Processing > Remove Tool > More Stable

Encountered quite a number of times where the remove tool removes outside of the brushed area. Most of the time almost the whole image. So it fills the whole image and perhaps of the sheer size of the canvas, a lot of it ends up blurry. The brushed area also did not get a good fill.

Another one is where it fills the area with a feathered black patch like a soft black brush instead of relevant content.

Settings:
Sample all layers, unchecked remove after each stroke, Generative AI on

Yeah, I’ve run into that too — seems like a glitch in the new version. The remove tool sometimes misreads the mask and tries to fill beyond the selected area. For now, reducing brush size and zooming in before applying helps a bit. You can also try toggling “Generative AI” off temporarily; it usually gives more controlled results until Adobe patches this issue.

Hey @hannah_2740

Thank you for sharing. This is affecting you as well. Are you using the same version as the Original Poster (OP), and have you tried the troubleshooting listed above?

Specifically, please share a video of the issue and the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > Upload and attach here. This will help us narrow down the issue and the troubleshooting steps.

Hey @35051668,
Thanks for the follow-up! I don’t have a video of it right now, but I can try to capture one next time it happens. For reference, I’m on the latest Photoshop version (26.11 on Mac). The issue appears randomly when using the Remove Tool with Generative AI on — it expands outside the brushed area and sometimes fills the whole canvas. I’ll share system info if it persists after restarting.

Hey, @arzelia. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll help you figure this out. Based on the limited description, this behavior could be expected, but we'll need specific workflow info to be sure. Please share a video of the issue and the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > Upload and attach here.

As a test, try these steps:

1—Go to Photoshop > Settings > Performance > Advanced Settings > Disable/uncheck GPU Compositing & restart Photoshop.

2—Please test and confirm if Photoshop (Beta) has an issue. You can get Photoshop (Beta) from the Creative Cloud > Apps tab > Beta Apps section.

Thanks!
