Question

Remove Tool frequently gives program error and does nothing

When using the Remove Tool, sometimes it works but most frequently, after a long while of “Removing area...” I get an error: “Could not complete your request because of a program error”. Clicking the “Learn how to fix” doesn’t offer any help since all the solutions on that page I have tried or are not related with this case.

This happens both in Ps Beta 28.0.1 and Ps 27.11.0 but it doesn’t happen always. Sometimes I try and it fails, then I redraw the selection again and it works with all the same parameters except for the hand drawn magenta selection.

Tried to attach a screenshot here but it is not working properly now, so here is a link:

Hi @Art of Walls, Thanks for reaching out to the Photoshop Community Forums! Let's try to figure this out by testing out a few things:

    1. Update GPU Drivers: Ensure that the graphics processing unit (GPU) drivers are up to date. This can help resolve compatibility issues that may cause program errors.

    2. Adjust Remove Tool Processing Settings:

      • Open Photoshop and go to Preferences.

      • Navigate to Image Processing.

      • Select the More Stable option under Remove Tool Processing. This setting can enhance the stability of the Remove Tool.

    3. Check Internet Connection: Ensure that the computer is connected to the Internet, as the Remove Tool requires components to be downloaded from Adobe servers.

    4. Resetting Photoshop Preferences: Meanwhile, you can try to reset the preferences of Photoshop using the steps mentioned here:  https://adobe.ly/4jmvs7u. Please back up your settings before resetting the preferences. You can check:  https://adobe.ly/3YW1WOu

If none of these steps work for you, we can continue troubleshooting the issue. I hope this helps! ^CH

    Hi Claire,

Thanks for helping me on this matter.

    About the tests proposed:

    1. The GPU drivers for my NVidia RTX 3090 with 12GB VRAM are up to date.
    2. I have selected “More Stable” for “Remove Tool Processing” and restarted the program but I keep getting the same error.
    3. My Internet connection is flawless. I have a symmetrical fibre optics residential connection of 1Gbps. No local domains, no business LAN with firewalls or anything. Just my router and my computer and printer through Ethernet and my tablets, cell phones, Android-TV, etc. through WiFi. The hosts file is not blocking any Adobe IP (or any IP at all for the case).
    4. I have reset Photoshop Preferences in the beta version but the problem persists. I don’t want to reset preferences on my stable version of Ps seeing this doesn’t fix the issue in the beta version.

So, I’m afraid none of the steps has solved the issue.

First of all: the beta version and the release version are not necessarily always comparable in terms of their behavior.

Secondly: In your original post, you mention that version 27.11 is also affected by the issue. Now you state that this version is running stably, and for that reason, you do not want to reset the preferences.

    It’s a little bit confusing.

As @Claire H. wrote you should save the preferences before you do a reset.

Back up and restore Photoshop preferences | Photoshop

In case that the reset doesn’t you can restore the preferences very easily.
