Question

Remove tool: "Sample content from all visible layers" activates itself

I never want the remove tool to sample all layers. I turn it off but somehow it keeps toggling back to active. Not often, just occasioanlly. Is this intended behavior? Earlier iterations had this as “sticky.” My hope is that it would remain “sticky” as the clone tool and healing tool are. I often get confusing and unsatisfying results until I realize this has popped on again.

@robertw44482386 I don't see this behavior on my system. I'm using the Essential workspace though, and the Sample All Layers setting appears to stay where I leave it when I open or close Photoshop. Which Workspace are you using? As a workaround, create a Tool Preset with Sample All Layers turned off and use that preset whenever you switch back to the Remove Tool. It's not perfect, but it can help reduce surprises.

    Hi @robertw44482386,

Thanks for reporting this! I understand how frustrating it can be when the Remove tool unexpectedly changes a setting, especially when it affects your editing results.

The Sample content from all visible layers option should normally retain your selection. I’d like to narrow down what’s causing it to turn back on.

    Could you please confirm:

    1. Which Photoshop version and operating system are you using? You can also share Help > System Info > Copy.

    2. Does the option turn itself back on after restarting Photoshop, switching tools, or opening another document, or does it happen while working on the same image?

    3. If possible, could you share a short screen recording showing the setting changing unexpectedly?

We previously addressed a similar issue in which the Remove tool settings weren't retained. I want to confirm whether this is a regression or a different issue before taking it further.

    Thanks for your help!

    Best,
    Anshul Saini
