Question

Resize text box without affecting text size

Hello,

Something changed with PS? Because I cannot resize the text box without automatically resizing the text size inside of it.

I want my text size to be 10. But when I resize the text box, the text inside of it automatically adjusts to 14 or more.

Why did you make it so cumbersome? 😞

If the type layer is paragraph text, how resizing changes the type layer’s contents is controlled by whether or not text editing is active. If you want to resize the layer without scaling the type, the type layer must be in text editing mode; you can see when it’s in this mode because the transform box changes to a dashed line. When you see the dashed line, you know that dragging a transform box handle rewraps the text instead of scaling the text. So before you drag a handle on the transform box of a type layer, check to see whether the box is either solid or dashed, depending on how you want to resize it, and toggle the edit mode if needed.

In the demo below, the text layer starts out selected and text editing is not active, so when I drag a handle on the solid transform box of the text layer, the entire text container scales and distorts. I undo that and enter text editing mode, which changes the text container’s transform box to a dashed line. I drag a handle on that to resize the text container and as it resizes it rewraps the lines of type inside it, instead of changing the text size.

Solid or dashed box. That’s all there is to it.

I have the same problem. The text is clearly shown as "Paragraph Text" yet when I resize the text box it resizes and even warps the text!

Help!

I had the same question. In the past all text box will show transform control with type tool. This paragraph vs point text thing is such an annoying change. Do we pay subscription for Adobe to push out annoying and confusing changes?

Paragraph and point text is not a change. It has been that way for years.

Yea sounds like you might not be familiar with the two different modes of text boxes / text layers:

  • Point Text mode: Like you're describing currently happening, the text box resizes the text within it as you resize
  • Paragraph Text mode: The text size is independent of the text box bounds

You can convert between the modes for a text layer by right clicking that text layer in the layer panel, and clicking either "Convert to Point Text" or "Convert to Paragraph Text". In your case it seems you would want to convert to paragraph text.

Assuming you are using paragraph text, i.e you used the Type tool to drag out a box and typed within it, then you can resize the text box with the Type tool active, not the Move tool. You should be able to drag the box handles independently of the text size.
