Question

Restoring from poor quality photo

Probably a common questions.  How do I make a 4" x 4" old photo sent at 72ppi large enough to work with and restore? Not just upsizing per-se creating a workable file?

As the others have said, that really is a big ask with such a small file.  Someone has scanned that image to send to you.  Did they paste the image into the email rather than attach as an image?  Whatever it was, you should ask then to scan at 300dpi and send to you as an attachment.

I bought and installed Topaz Photo Ai yesterday after it was recommended.  This is a 400% upscale.  Some of it looks ok, but some of the faces are scary and the text (names) have been butchered.   I also ran it through the Photo Restoration Neural filter, but there was nothing much to do after Topaz Photo Ai.  If you can get a better scan then I'll run it through again if you like.

Out of interest, this is how Photoshop upscaled the image to the same size

There just isn't enough pixel information when I use the traditional restoration workflow.  Also, I didn't say I'm running CS2 (and beta) on a PC
