Question

Save for Web exporting at larger file size.

I'm using Save for Web in Photoshop to export a static backup for banner ads, keeping the file under 40K. In Photoshop, the file size shows as 38.79K, but after saving, Finder on my Mac reports it as 53K. This discrepancy is unusually large, and Save for Web has always been accurate for me before. I'm not sure why it's suddenly off. I'm using Mac Photoshop 2024 (v25.11). I've also tried this in a newer version of Photoshop and experienced the same issue. I've covered the original creative with black in this screenshot as to protect the proprietary content.

I'm thinking that it could be related to the newer versions of MacOS.

I doubt that the OS has anything to do with this. I'm on Windows 10.

While it may be an estimate, it used to be extremely accurate and static backups for HTML banner ads are required to be 40kb or less. It may not matter in most cases or for most people but in my case it does matter. I'm thinking that it could be related to the newer versions of MacOS.

I'm seeing something similar when I try to save a small file, 39 kb ends up as 48 kb.

The file size you see in Save for web is obviously an estimate, since the file hasn't been created yet.

And frankly, it doesn't matter if a file is 38 or 53 kb. Both files are very small.

The estimated file size seems to be more accurate for larger files.
