Of course never delete a file until it is backed up! Preferably more than once. You’ll certainly need to delete a whole lot, but never remove files you don’t understand. With the external disk plugged in do you see it in Photoshop?

If your External HD is formatted with FAT 32 or Windows NTFS, it wont be recognized as a Photoshop scratch drive even if MacOS will mount and use it.

Format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using Disk Utility.

Warning: Formatting will erase all data on the external drive. Back it up to another drive if you want to keep it.

    Hi Glynden,

We're sorry for a bad experience with Photoshop, let us help make this right. Could you please let us know which exact version of Photoshop you're working on and which operating system are you using?

You could try defragmenting the hard disk and see if it helps: Do You Need to Defragment a Mac's Hard Drive?

Also, you may try changing the scratch disk of Photoshop by following the steps mentioned below:

Hold down CMD+OPTION (Mac) as soon as Photoshop starts to get this menu

Select another disk with more room and let us know if it helps?

    Regards,
    Sahil

    Hi

    A few questions.
1.How much free space do you have on your scratchdisk?

2.What version of Photoshop are you using?

    3. What do you see in Preferences > Scratch Disk?

If you cannot open Photoshop to answer the last two questions, hold down CTRL+ALT(PC) / CMD+OPTION(Mac) whilst starting Photoshop to get a menu where you can set the scratch disk.

See also this thread - and the comments toward the end on the format of the external disk
