Scratch Disk Still Full After Clearing Space

I'm using Photshop 2024 on my MacBook Air with macOS 14.4.1. I'm trying to load a GIF file that's 52.5MB with 866 × 1668 pixels dimensions, but I get the error message that my scratch disk is full. So I cleared some space, reset Photoshop preferences, and restarted the app, but I still get the same error message. I've also tried creating a new document that fits the dimensions of the file and then uploading the file directly on that document, but it still doesn't work.

Does anyone know what else I can do to fix this issue?

Biggest problem, you have a base configuration with only 8GB of memory and a 256GB internal drive. This will be a limitation for really any use of Photoshop. You will IMMEDIATELY use the available memory and be heavily into your scratch disk space, plus macOS needs disk space as well for virtual memory.

If you can't replace this computer with one that has 16GB of RAM or more, at least buy an external USB-C or Thunderbolt SSD and move files and/or your scratch disk assignment to that drive. You also want to be backing up your files, either with Time Machine or other backup software. make sure nothing else is running (quit Lightroom, web browser, anything else on the computer) to free up as much memory as you can. OWC is a good, reputable source for Mac peripherals.

Finally, you can update macOS to version 14.6.1 or to the new macOS Sequoia version 15.0 for free. I'd at least do the v14 updates.
