Question

Select subject: "processing image on device due to connection issues"

I'm running a lot of images through the subject selection via cloud (which I've selected in the settings) as part of an action.

It's been going through a lot of images already and I've just realised that for a brief moment this progress bar appears:
"Processing image on device due to connection issues".

It's not an error message. It's just a "courtesy information". Meaning if you don't pay attention it just happens and you don't get a real warning or error to inform you of what just happens. It's very "hush-hush", blink and you miss it. It's there for a fraction of a second.

Why is that problematic? Because I have to manually re-reck an re-evaluate EVERY image. I don't get to see which ones are affected and which ones are not. If I wanted to use the device to select the subject I would do that but if the cloud option fails for whatever reason I should be notified in a proper manner, not just as a side-note that is barely noticeable. That's not okay, this has a real impact on our work!

If there's a connection issue PUT THAT INFORMATION OUT THERE.

If the cloud processing doesn't work TELL ME IN A CLEAR AN VISIBLE WAY.

What good is all that AI stuff if I can't be sure it's acually being used and if I have to do all the work over and over again just to make sure it's okay?

1) In the case of automation (via Action or Script) an alert that needs to be OK-ed could be a stumbling block and

2) I don’t think the results of Cloud-based masking don’t need to be checked, too,

so I don’t completely agree with your argumentation, but as in other cases a Preferences setting regarding alerts (or an alert that includes a »Don’t show again«-checkbox) would naturally seem the proper choice.

You may want to post a Feature Request (mark it »Idea« instead of »Discussion«) – implementation or official reactions are not guaranteed but other Photoshop users can add their votes and lend weight to the request.

My suggestion:

If it doesn't work give ma proper error message like this:

"Currently there seems to be an issue with the cloud processing network. Would you like to process the image(s) using the local subject selection instead?"

Then I know what's happening. Or better yet - make use of the various labels, especially when it's a batch process via Bridge. Just put a "To Do" label on those images and let me decide afterwards whether I want to wait until the connection issues are gone OR process them locally. But don't just do it without giving me an option.
