Smart objects in photoshop

I have a smart object in photoshop. I have a need to replace a product in the smart object. So I am double clicking my smart object to edit. I am replacing the linked file with the new product. The new product is coming in with a white background so double clicking that file and removing the background. However when i save it it is not only updating the file in the smart object but it is saving over the original linked file in the asset library. It never used to do this. Can I change this process so I dont oversave master files?

Bring the linked SO into your document, and use New Smart Object via Copy to break the link.

@rogerb49443603 If I can recall, the problem is that when you directly edit a Smart Object (by double-clicking), you are editing the original linked file. So, saving after your edits overwrites that original file. This is why your master files are being changed.

I use the "Replace Content" command for swapping out images in Smart Objects. This is the safest way.
