Question

Something for the Weekend - Part 269 - Off the cuff!

Thanks to all who took part in our ‘mystery’ challenge. It is amazing to see the variations explaining what might have happened in the woods.

Those who regularly take part in these challenges will know that sometimes we start with an object and sometimes a scene. This week it is the turn of these handcuffs. They are from Adobe 3D assets and were textured in Substance Painter, along with the other objects, then rendered in Blender 3D, before finishing in Photoshop. How will you use the cuffs? Will they appear on someone in your image or will you turn them into something else completely?

The “rules”:

  • Use the starter image as at least part of your own image entry.
  • Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright, etc.
  • Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum “regulars”.
  • The challenge is not limited to Photoshop. Any Adobe software can be used.
  • There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off your skills, or bring a bit of humor and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!
  • The starter image is made available for you to use in this forum challenge only.

To download the starter image, click it, then, when the image opens in its own window, right-click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar, depending on your browser).

When posting back your image, please use the reply button in this first post and use the 'Insert Photos' icon at the bottom of the reply box. If posting a comment on someone else’s entry, then please use the reply button next to their image post.

Have fun!

Dave.

I mentioned Relight in the last SFTW.  Since then I’ve been looking at Radbin Lightsmith.  It has a lot more control and looked impressive in the YouTube video I saw, (from the author).  I wanted to try it out, but my credit card didn’t like his website (he is based in Dubai).  It comes with half a dozen tools, but has a lot of overlap with existing Photoshop tools and functions.

I’d be very interested if anyone sees this and has used it?

SOIR DE RAFLE de chez POULET (for frenchies)

    Here is the pormpt :

I’m a little worried that the pool of wet stuff on the road, is the melted remains of the person who was wearing the handcuffs after they dabbed a drop Soir De Rafle on each wrist, and promptly deliquesced!  It could happen.

It looks like the eyes have independent rotation so they will watch you no matter where you hide 😃

Thought a magic trick is needed here. The crowd here are easily impressed.

    Firefly - Gemini 3.1 (Nano Banana 2)

    Initial prompt
Create a comic strip story in 4 frames. Storybook realism. Bright and colourful. Use reference image for hadcuffs.
    1. A magician handcuffs himself on stage.
    2. He dramatically disappears in a cloud of smoke.
    3. The audience applauds wildly.
    4. The smoke clears. The magician is gone, but his trousers remain, handcuffed to a chair.

I kept it simple to see what details would be added. I made a few iterations in the conversational approach with Gemini, then some small polishing in Photoshop.

Dean, I’ve worked it out!  The magician is actually very very small, and he hides inside those purple trouser/pants.  Under cover of the smoke he quickly lets all of the air out of the inflatable full size magician, and hides the deflated magician and himself behind the purple trouser/pants.  The crowd roars. The curtain comes down. Ipso Facto.  It’s a bust!

Hi Trevor. Well done for discovering the magic. But now you’ve spoiled it for others.🤣

You may have missed a detail to the magic trick. When the magician started he was handcuffed to a fragile chair

How is is he to get free?

Then at the end, the ‘shackles’ have become more difficult to remove from the chair.

Your image has moved the handcuffs back to where they started in frame 1, well actually on the floor, which is probably another element of the magic in the comic strip.

On a technical thing, did you load the comic image in and ask Gemini to look at the scene from above? Ihat exactly was your prompt?

I’ve had the modified Dave Head for a wee while but not used it before.  The rest is mostly manual including segmenting the head into layers.

I love how you’ve used the handcuffs but also the notepad and pen in this image. Very nicely done.

This is really quite special Jane.  It’s like art, and the sort of image that would do well in a photographic competition.  It would be entirely eligible as well — nothing AI about it.  I like it a lot!

I like it Bob.  Adjustable hoop size. Close it up for the visiting side, and open up for the home side.  Who’s going to notice? ;-)
