Question

Stroke width limit for shape, property (32) vs layer style (250), plus an anomaly

I am using Photoshop 2024 (25.12.4). Normally the stroke width is limited to 32px in the shape properties and 250px in a layer style. However, I have sometimes been able to set a width larger than 32px in the Properties panel, but I have absolutely no idea what allowed me to.

Can someone explain this? In what circumstances will shape layer properties panel allow entry of a number greater than 32?

I wondered if it was linked to the size of the shape and canvas size?  For instance, if it is an Inside Stroke, then would it only go as far as needed to fill the shape?  However, that is not the case for me.  I am able to set this rather bizarre number with a decimal point, and that is for inside and outside.

OK, it seems to be a function of image resolution.  I increased my image size by a factor of ten, and stroke was limited to just 2 pixels!  I reset the resolution with Resample turned off, and the max stroke increased to 400.   I didn't know this.

So try changing the resolution with resample turned off.

Ps 2024 and Ps 2025 allow a 250px stroke width, as does Layer Style>Stroke. I tried to set stroke to 400px but was prevented by the tool.

Pardon my ignorance, but I don't see a way to edit stroke in the Properties panel.
