suffix on image files when saving

Hello.

Previously I was able to use Photoshop and when naming my files to save they would appear as the file name only with no .jpg. Now the suffix shows up and I need to erase it before saving every time. How can I get it where the suffix doen't appear?

example of how it currently appears: File name: 3O7A03539.jpg

how it used to appear: File name: 3O7A03539

After I make edits to a file I save it with code letters that mean something to me if I need to go back and see how I edited an image.

In the current status I need to backspace/erase 4 keystrokes for each file then type my own "code": letter(s). If I have hundred of images from a shoot that's a lot of extra keystrokes/time.

Is this something I can simply turn off?

You need to change this in Windows expolorer, if you're on Windows.

To hide common file extensions in Windows, you can use the Hide extensions for known file types option in the Folder Options menu. To unhide file extensions, you can turn off this option. 

 

 
To hide file extensions in Windows 
 
 
  1. Open File Explorer
  2. Click Tools
  3. Click Folder Options
  4. Click the View tab
  5. Scroll down to Hide extensions for known file types
  6. Check the box to hide file extensions
  7. Click OK
 
To unhide file extensions in Windows 
 
 
  1. Open File Explorer
  2. Click Tools
  3. Click Folder Options
  4. Click the View tab
  5. Scroll down to Hide extensions for known file types
  6. Uncheck the box to unhide file extensions
  7. Click OK

 

If you're on Mac, you can do it too. Just Google hide common file extension.
