Question

Super resolution DNG does not keep resolution in non-adobe apps

I'm working with timelapse sequences and batch processing, taking raw image sequences, upscaling with PS super reolution and then trying to deflicker or otherwise enhance in additional software.

Original image: RW2 file at 8368x5584
Upscaled with PS Enhance SR to 16736x11168 and saved as DNG

When I open this DNG file in a non-adobe app (I tried TLDF and Topaz Photo AI) it reads the file as 8393x5632. Anything exported from those apps is this size, not the enhanced size. I need the DNG file since TLDF doesn't work with anything other than RAW files, and if I put it through TLDF first, then the resulting DNG doesn't allow for PS Enhance to use RAW enhance.

Strangely, I was using this same workflow a year ago and had no problem exporting the enhanced size from TLDF. Did something change with the way PS encodes the enhanced DNGs?

Windows 11, PS 25.9.0

Hey @CFparks15144037. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll help you figure this out.

With Camera Raw v16 (October 2023 release) & later, the Lossy DNG was changed to use JPEG XL compression instead of JPEG.

In the Camera Raw window, when you use the Enhance > Super Resolution > you can right-click on the Enhanced DNG output in the Filmstrip > Save Image... > in the Format: > change the Compatibility to Camera Raw from 15.3 to an older version & check if that helps.

Here are similar threads that may help: P: Regarding JXL Compression in derived Merge/Enhance DNG Images
Lossy DNG converted files missing embedded jpeg previews since around version 13.0?

Let me know how if it helps. Thanks!
