Taskbar freezing but workspace still active

After launching PS a few minutes into editing my taskbar freezes. I cannot access " File, edit, layers, filters, image, type " etc. however the window i am working in operates as normal i am able to access the tool bar, and adjust layers etc. in order to save my work I have to hit the " x" and photoshop default alerts me to save my work which I can use to export my image. The only way i've found to fix it is to completely shut down PS and relaunch it but again after a few minutes of working it begins again.
