The custom spot is lost when importing a Photoshop file with a custom spot channel to Illustrator and exporting again. How can we fix this?

Input to Illustrator from Photoshop: Are you importing a PSD with spot channels or another file format? Is the spot colour from Photoshop importing into Illustrator and appearing in the swatches panel?

Output from Illustrator: what file format are you exporting from Illustrator? How are you verifying that the spot isn't in the output file.

pdf exported from Illustrator for example maintains Spot Colors fine, so what file format do you need to ultimately create?

Why do you need to edit the file in Illustrator anyway?
