The highlighted text won't change after clicking the font/typface dropdown in the type tool character menu/tool box. The highlight will be gone, and you won't be able to change it. Restarting everything didn't fix it.

Windows. 
Resolved, after 3-5 restarts of the PC and Photoshop, I don't know what the real solution is, but restarting so many times solved it.

What System?

I'm not seeing any such issue with 26.10.0 on Mac, whether by the Character panel or the top Control panel.
