The List of Recent File NO LONGER SHOWS PRECISE FILE LOCATION

Recent files on PS home page & File>Open Recent Menu of Workspace no longer show file location. This changed within the last few weeks after a recent PS update. Now the homepage shows “On Your Computer”. There may be many versions of a file. W/o this info, it is difficult to choose the correct version.

An alternative is my Photoshop Session Manager script:

Unlike the home screen, it’s not thumbnail/visual (you need to use the “View Log” button to see the image paths in the session), but it does offer other advantages over the home screen or native recent files feature.

Thanks, Stephen. Correct me if I have misunderstood, but in order to use your script, I would have to have the file open in PS? So, I would have to either click on a “Recent Files” image or open a file another way before I could use your script? What I would like to be able to do again is identify which thumbnail or entry in the Recent Files list is the image that I want to work with before opening it up.

That’s correct, it’s designed to save/open sessions of one or more open documents.

The idea being that you might be working on 7 images, but then get interrupted and have to close them down and then work on something else, before coming back to the original images.

By using the script to save/close the open documents, their paths are written to a log file, which is then used to reopen the images. You can view the paths in the log file if needed.

The script replicates the basic session feature and workflow offered in other apps such as GIMP, Krita etc. My script goes a lot further than the session options found in these apps.

Single document sessions are automatically named after the open image. Multiple open document sessions are either automatically named with a date/time stamp or optionally via a custom name.

As it’s an ExtendScript, it doesn’t offer thumbnails. A UXP panel could ‘easily’ do so, but that’s beyond my current experience and knowledge.

Which version of Photoshop are you currently using? Has it started after the recent update?
System info from Photoshop Help menu (System > Help > Copy-Paste it here )?
Did this change occur immediately after a specific update? If yes, do you recall which version?
Does this behavior occur both on the Home screen and under File > Open Recent, or only in one place?

These details will help us better understand the issue and help you accordingly.

It think the change was after the latest update, but it might have been the one previous. noticed the change about 1 -2 weeks ago, and I think there may have been two updates in that time frame? I didn’t report it immediately because I wanted to check things on my end and see if perhaps a setting had been inadvertently changed.

Yes, similar behavior occurs on both the home screen and under the File>Open Recent menu. On the Home screen, “On your computer” appears under a truncated file name. On the File>Open menu, I just see a list of truncated recent file names. When I right click on any of those, nothing appears. No file location, no drop-down box, etc.

One thing you need to be aware of is that Recent Files never showed the actual path. What it showed was wherever the file was initially saved and that’s the location it links to. If a file is renamed or moved from the outside, the link just goes dead and no longer connects to the file or the folder it’s in.

In other words, Recent Files is not a substitute for a proper file browser, like Bridge or Windows Explorer. Don’t trust it. It’s basically intended to quickly pick up where you left off before lunch.

Thanks, I do know about that but it was still helpful and worked to locate the file more times than not. I use Bridge and Explorer but both of those generally require a more extensive, time consuming search through the directory structure to find the correct version. The Recent Files option has always been a quick and useful way to identify different versions stored in different locations and select the proper one to work on. Until now.

Hi @scenicshutterbug ,

This seems to be a recent Photoshop UI change in an attempt to simplify cloud/local labels, which is why you now see “On your computer” instead of the full file path.

You can use the Reveal in Finder/Explorer method to identify the file path.

Go to the Home screen → Recent Files
Right-click the file thumbnail
Windows: Reveal in Explorer
Mac: Reveal in Finder.

Well it certainly has simplified things to the point that it is useless! I do know about the Reveal in Finder/Explorer, however that is not working anymore either. When I right click the thumbnail nothing is displayed. That should NOT be how this works. The full path should still be visible. It would be better to change anything stored in the cloud to say “In the Cloud” and leave the precise path in place for locally stored files.
