Question

Unable to change print settings 95% of the time, always have to restart the program

Almost every single time I go to print a file, whenever I click the Print Settings button, these errors pop up:

The only way to solve this issue has been to completely exit out of the program and restart it. I don’t know why it’s talking about smart objects or even exporting something to the clipboard. I just need to change my print settings to change the paper type/size, make sure Photoshop, not the printer, is controlling the colors, etc. Otherwise everything prints out wrong.

In addition to the advice from Sameer, try holding the spacebar when clicking on Print. That will reset the print dialogue.

Hey, @Troy22932790qu23. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll need more information to help you figure this out. Please share a video of the issue and the system info from Photoshop Help > System info. Copy and paste it into a text document, then upload and attach it here.

Do you know if this happens with the specific documents? Is this image stored on an external drive or in a folder associated with cloud backup services? Working through a network or external drive is unpredictable & is not recommended. Head here to learn more: https://adobe.ly/3A2G2zK.

Before you go to File > Print, go to Edit > Purge > Clipboard and check if that helps.

If not, ensure there are no stale preferences in Photoshop.

Go to the location of the preference folder below and rename it to backup.

    • Windows 10/11: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
    • You can press Press the Windows key > Enter 'Run' > Enter %APPDATA%\Adobe
    • Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2026 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2026. old), You can restore these preferences later if needed.(https://adobe.ly/4860qM9)
    • Restart the computer.

These changes will give Photoshop a fresh start as a new install. Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks!
