unable to delete a slected area

I'm following a YouTube Tutorial:

Photoshop: How to Make a Woodcut from a Photo

One of the instructions is to Delete a Selected area on a Layer mask by clicking (cmd + D)

The problem is I'm unable to delete the selection, (cmd + D) doesn't Delete the selection, it Deselect it.

And the keyboard Delete key doesn't work, so my question is how do I delete the selection?

I'm using a Mac with OS 10.12.4 and Adobe Photoshop 2017

cmd + d is deselect, not delete. If you are on layer mask, you can simply invert the color, cmd+i - so if you have a black part of the mask selected, make it white.

The moral of the story is:

Beware of tutorials you find on youtube.

Would this be the Background layer?  The Delete key triggers the Fill command on background layers.  To make it actually delete the selected pixels, just click on the padlock icon on the layer, to make it a normal layer.
