Undo solid color in photoshop cs4

I have selected people from my image and added a solid color to try and blur the background (following Youtube video instructions). Since I am having difficult with that, I want to use the same selection to make the background black & white BUT I don't know how to get the selection I cut out back to normal. Basically I DON'T want to use the magic wand tool and redo the cut out because it took forever to do! Is this possible?

Thanks!

Also, I wanted to attach a picture to show you what steps I have taken but I don't see an option for that. (Bare with me, first time on this forum!)

On the web forum, just copy and paste the image into your post/reply.

Or use the Insert Image button in the forum post toolbar.
