Unlocking a layer in a gif or png

Hi,

Am I correct that you cannot unlock a layer for a gif or png document?

And if so, can therefore not copy the image from one file to another?

    You may be limited in your editing options if you are in Photoshop's 'Indexed Color' mode. Switch the color mode to RGB (ar anything but Index).
