Upgraded Mac's Sonoma OS. Custom profiles available for soft proofing, but not printing in PS or LR

  • September 3, 2024

The profile I created for my printer/paper combination is available for soft proofing in both Photoshop and Lightroom classic. It fails to show up in the list of profiles when printing in either Photoshop or Lightroom classic. I tried to reinstall an older version of the OS – Sonoma – but the computer gives the message that the OS cannot be downgraded. Has anyone figured out how to solve this problem or find a work-around? Thanks. Richard Baldy

I have already try to reset the Print Driver, but no change.

The last think no yet perforned is a clean install of CC2024 I'll try this last step this week.

@guy__l If you're planning a clean install please see notes here since items can get left behind:

Perhaps try a thorough reset of Photoshop preferences?

(read this entire post before acting please)

Resetting restores Photoshop's internal preferences, which are saved when Photoshop closes.

If they become corrupt then various issues can occur.

Here’s some info on how to do that:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

Manually removing preferences files is the most complete method for restoring Photoshop to its default state:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

Manually removing preferences files is the most complete method for restoring Photoshop to its default state. This method ensures all preferences and any user presets which may be causing a problem are not loaded.

  1. Quit Photoshop.

  2. Navigate to Photoshop's Preferences folder.
macOS: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
Windows: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Note: The user Library folder is hidden by default on macOS. To access files in the hidden user Library folder, see How to access hidden user library files.
  3. Drag the entire Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder to the desktop or somewhere safe for a back-up of your settings

  4. Open Photoshop.

New preferences files will be created in their original location.

Note re macOS: The user Library folder is hidden by default.

To access files in the hidden user Library folder, see here for how to access hidden user library files.

Unexpected behaviour may indicate damaged preferences. Restoring preferences to their default settings is a good idea when trying to troubleshoot unexpected behaviours in Photoshop. check out the video

Learn how to access and modify Photoshop preferences and customise per your frequent workflows

And here’s an earlier forum discussion as an aid to understanding

https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/quick-tips-how-to-reset-photoshop-preferences/td-p/12502668

You may want to backup your settings and custom presets, brushes & actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences.

Here is general info about that:  https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#BackupPhotoshoppreferences

Before you reset your preferences

in case of future issues, I suggest you make a copy as Adobe may need one to check problematic references.

Quit Photoshop.
Go to Photoshop's Preferences folder

Preferences file locations: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/preference-file-names-locations-photoshop.html\

[on MacOS see: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Note for those on macOS: - be aware that the user Library folder is hidden by default on macOS.

  https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/access-hidden-user-library-files.html

In the Finder, open the “Go” menu whilst holding down the Option (Alt) key.

Library will now appear in the list - below the current user's “home” directory. ]

Now you can drag the entire Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder to the desktop or somewhere safe as a back-up of your settings.

Note for those on macOS:

Preference preservation is affected by macOS permissions,

you’ll need to allow Photoshop ‘Full Disk Access’ in your Mac OS Preferences/Security and Privacy

If that doesn't fix the issue:

Go to Preferences > Performance... and uncheck Multithreaded Compositing - and restart Photoshop.

Still hanging?

Go to Preferences > Performance... click Advanced Settings... and uncheck "GPU Compositing" - then restart Photoshop.

Do you still have problems?

It may even be time to reinstall Photoshop.

It’s recommended that you use the Adobe CC cleaner tool to remove all traces first.

(See above about preserving preferences though! It’s worth preserving them unless they are corrupted.)

https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

Uninstall Photoshop BUT make sure to choose the option “Yes, remove app preference”.

Once that process finishes, start the installation process and look into the “Advanced Options”. Uncheck “Import previous settings and preferences” and choose to “Remove old versions”.

I hope this helps

I have the same issue : OS Sonoma, CC2024 and Epson Stylus Pro P900. In end august the mac was upgraded to Sonoma and since then in ALL Adobe app, only the native Epson icc are available (i use some x-rite profiles and a lot of Ilford and Hahnemuehle icc). The icc version for Hahnemuehle and x-rite are 4.3.0, or ilford 2.1.0. All the icc are availaible use colormatching/colorsync options when i let the printer managing the color, but only the native Epson (linked to the printer driver) when i use Photoshop manage the color option !

I don't think about a icc version issue as the problem is both for icc 2.x.x and 4.x.x.

Before the Sonoma upgrade, there are no issue with Adobe CC2024 and the icc management by photoshop. Yes the Epson driver was updated with/and after the Sonoma upgrade.

Do you have any suggestion ? Adobe / Apple or Espon driver issue ?

@guy__l You may need to remove the printer in settings then download a new driver directly from Epson and install, then add in settings - BUT do not select Use: Airprint".  Reinstalling Epson's driver software should place the profiles where Photoshop can see them. If not it's maybe a Mac OS Sonoma issue.

I don't have Sonoma but maybe this will help:

Epson printer profiles are missing in Photoshop manages color in the print dialog (Mac)

To use "Photoshop Manages Color" properly (to make accurate prints) you need access to the printer manufacturer's paper specific profiles, since you need to select the relevant paper profile in that dialog.

Using "Printer Manages Color" should work for Epson’s own papers, as long as the printer driver is correctly installed.

Printer Manages Color [based on the media type selected] calls upon ICC printer profiles from a different installed folder*

[*usually a hidden one, this is so they don't get deleted inadvertently, more on that and how to find them below].

Epson ICC printer profiles may be missing in Photoshop after updating macOSX. This issue started with Mojave.

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-and-macosmojave.html#epson-printer-profiles-missing

Adobe’s tips:-

To resolve this issue, reset the printing system in your Mac's system preferences and then add your Epson printer again.

  1. Reset the printing system.
For instructions, refer to Apple's support documentation: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203343#reset

  2. Add your Epson printer again.
For instructions, refer to Apple's macOSX User Guide documentation: Add a printer on Mac

  3. Relaunch Photoshop.

When you select Photoshop manages color in the “print” dialog, the “printer profile” dropdown should now provide you with a list of all the ICC printer profiles on your system. If not please read on.

The Epson installer puts them in hidden folders, but normally Photoshop can access them via a hidden link.

You may be able to find the profiles manually in the folder hierarchy

Are you working on a PC? If so, you may need help from Epson's support team.

Here are some Mac tips for when Photoshop can't find the Epson profiles:

I had to search for these myself on a client site once, took me quite a while and a lot of head scratching. But it means I now know how to find them

Basically, the printer profiles are in a folder hidden away in the system “library”

Navigate to

Your hard disk name”/library/ printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/ICCProfiles/ [hidden inside a “package”]

[Not in the “your username”/library/ ]

Screenshot below

Inside the ICCProfiles folder (see above) is another folder containing the printer name, e.g:  Epson Stylus Pro 4900_4910.profiles

If you right click [or ‘control’ click] it and select "show package contents"

A contents folder appears

Now look inside that folder and you’ll find the ”resources" folder.

see screenshot below

These are the icc profiles which used within the Epson driver [e.g. when you select Photoshop’s 'printer manages colour' option],

DO NOT DELETE OR MOVE THEM. It’s OK to copy of course.

SO - don't drag to move them as this actually removes them from the original folder

You can copy to your normal ICC profiles folder which is in the system library

[ computer name/hard disk name/Library/Colorsync/Profiles ]

Restart Photoshop, can you now see the profiles you copied across in Photoshop’s print dialog under "Photoshop manages color"?

I hope this helps

Happy Printing

Not helping !

Please read the issue submitted – "Only the Epson profiles are available, not the others ! ".

The printer driver is "Epson made" not Airprint.

@"It fails to show up in the list of profiles when printing in either Photoshop"
do you mean in the dropdown box in "Photoshop manages Colors"?

Or are you expecting the see the ICC profiles you made elsewhere during printing?

Do they show up in the profile list in Apple ColorSync Utility? (Included with every Mac)

What ICC profile version is it? I only ask because sometimes version 4 profiles cause problems, making it necessary to regenerate the profile as version 2.

Yes, they show up in ColorSync and in the list of profiles in view>proof setup>custom. The profile I have been using is one I created for my usual monitor/paper combination. I notice that the print options for profiles not only does not display my specific profile, but it also is a much shorter list of profiles than the list shown under view>proof setup>custom. Thank you for your help.

Well, for now I’m stumped and out of suggestions. I am printing this week on an Epson 3880 from a Mac running macOS 14.6.1, and the profiles are working. I do have two custom paper profiles that I generated using Calibrite software, and those are still showing up in the soft proof and printer profile menus. Hopefully someone will have another angle on the problem you’re having…

Maybe a printer driver issue. Try to delete and reinstall the printer. which brand is it?

The printer is an Epson SureColor P600. I just uploaded the latest driver version, but the problem persists.
