Using the keyboard shortcut to select the pixels in a layer isn't working for one layer

I’m having trouble selecting a layer using the keyboard shortcut on my Mac (Command-click on the layer icon). It works for some layers but not this one. I’ve never had this problem before. 

The layer was a smart object and I had used a displacement map to alter it. When the smart layer didn’t select, I rasterized it, but it still didn’t work. 

Maybe related (I’m not sure), I encountered another strange issue: when I created the file, I pasted in a man from another file. It was raster. I then duplicated the layer and resized this new layer. But when I go into the Camera Raw filter to adjust the exposure (Command-Shift-A on my Mac), it shows me the man in its original size (not the resized image)! What is happening?

PS I just tried to select the man using the Object Select tool and it selected it! Now I’m confused. I’ve never encountered this problem before. The Select Subject button also works. These are working both on the smart object layer and the rasterized layer.
