V 27.3.1. Windows 11.

When PS crash, my custom actions went missing. When I load my backup actions, some of my assigned shortcut keys for my actions are gone. Actions are still there but the assigned keys are gone. I have to manually add the keys to the actions.

I then backup the actions to another name. When PS crash again, the same thing happened, actions went missing. Reload it with the new backup, same thing. Some of the assigned keys are missing,

Thank you. I didn’t do all these as I have found the culprit. My CMOS battery is flat. Changed a new one and its working now.

You say “when” Photoshop crashes, so I’d be more concerned with why it crashes if it happens a lot. In almost all cases, that indicates a GPU configuration problem. A very common one is conflicting dual graphics, which you get around by disabling the integrated GPU. If you post Help < System Info from Photoshop, it lists the full GPU configuration.

Preferences are rewritten on every application shutdown, so you can see why crashing/irregular shutdowns can corrupt preferences.

@D Fosse the OP mentions what caused the crashes in his/her last reply

Ah, there you go with the “(+) show more replies” of this forum. Didn’t see that.

Anyway, that gets to the underling basic problem that needs to be fixed.

Hey, @magicdow. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. You've got some good advice from Jeff.  Please share the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy & paste into a text document > upload & attach here.

This can originate when the preferences are corrupted. The steps below will back up the current preferences and replace them with a completely new set. You’ll have to set up actions, shortcuts, & any other saved preferences and presets, hopefully, one last time.

Here goes, please make sure there are no stale preferences in your Photoshop. Go to the location of the preference folder below and rename it to backup.

    • Windows 10/11: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
    • You can press Press the Windows key > Enter 'Run' > Enter %APPDATA%\Adobe
    • Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2026 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2026. old), You can restore these preferences later if needed.(https://adobe.ly/4860qM9)
    • Restart the computer.

These changes will provide a fresh start to Photoshop, much like a new installation.

Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks!

    @Sameer K

After following your instructions, do I have to manually do all my actions again or can I import from my backup?

Thanks for the follow-up. If you’ve just remade all your actions, use the Actions Panel > Menu and export your Action groups as action groups (.atn files).

Export your other presets, like actions, before you manually reset Photoshop. This’ll help you iron out any underlying corruptions, and once you’ve reset, you can import the presets and actions again.

    Thanks!
