Video file not opening in Photoshop 2020

So, since updating to Photoshop 2020, I can't open a video file 😕😕

Getting an error messsage:

Could not open “filename.mp4” because the video file could not be opened.

Getting on my nerves a little bit, updated to the lastest version, I am on Catalina 🙂 I have tried a few different other video files, same errror and can't seem to find a fix 😕😕

Alright, 2 years have passed, but looks like updating my Mac to Monterey & Photoshop to Photoshop 2022 seems to have the glitch fixed 🙂

Ensure the MP4 file uses AVC (H.264) codec and not other codecs like HEVC (H.265)

Can someone help? Why can't I open video? I can open in other apps, I changed from .mov to .mp4 and same thing...

Adding Photoshop to Folders Privacy settings solve the issue for me. Add Documents folder to list.

This bug is persisting and annyoing! I am on macOS monterey 12.4 / PS 23.3.2 / M1 Chip

I can't open any form of video files anymore and I can't create a video timeline either, only "Frame Animation".

Sorry Adobe, but the amount of bugs in all of your products is just insane. I would switch in an instant if it weren't for your monopoly.

Opening PS in Rosetta is a work around. So please fix your "supposedly" M1 ready software.

I'm using photoshop 2022 in a new M1 iMac - BigSur 11.4 and suddenly the Photoshop stopped opening any video file.

I tried opening videos in different formats (mov, mp4) and even tried opening photoshop video files that I had worked on 2 months ago on the same machine. The message is saying that "can't recognize this type of file"

Does anyone know what is happening and how to fix it?

If Adobe is trying to push people to migrate to Premiere, why not just remove the function from the app?

It doesn't make any sense....

Hey, I found out, that, if I open Photoshop 2022 (23.2.2) with Rosetta on my MacBook Pro M1 Max, the video import is working.

It works with opening Photoshop with Rosetta for me, but not when it is unchecked on my M1. Hopefully Adobe will fix in future update so Rosetta is not needed.

surprising, since I'm updated as well, but there is still no option to import video without using Rosetta.

This happened to me. Restarting my Mac worked

MacBook Air with M1 chip; Big Sur 11.3.1

I used to be able to open videos in PhotoShop.

Now I can't.

I've tried everything here (short of the lengthy phone calls to Adobe technical support).

PhotoShop is no longer a video editor.

Additionally - tried importing into Lightroom (which worked) and then exporting it as a new file.

Photoshop still won't recognise the file, even though it was created by another Adobe app.

Any news on this? I just signed back up for cc after going to Affinity. Re-subscribed purely for the video timeline. Not importing at all on Macbook M1, or showing in the layers menu. Any idea if it will be fixed? Feel a bit annoyed I'm roped into another year, when it cant do what I signed up for anymore...

Yes. There is a viable workaround. See latest posts.

It's basically April 2021, I'm on Big Sur 11.2.3, Photoshop 22.3.0 on MacBook Air M1

I had CS6 and only signed up for CC to get the M1-optimized access to convert video to GIF in PS instead of lugging the PC around.

  • Files and Folder access change does not work
  • Moving mp4 file to Desktop does not work
  • Converting from MP4 to MP5 does not work
  • There is not even an option to Add Video to Layer in ANY mode, let alone Motion Workspace
