want layers to auto-raise

My layers have suddenly for not reason (that i know of) stopped auto raise.   How can I get them to go back to auto-raise.

       (In truth I'd never have chosen auto-raise, but after years and years with it, it's very hard to re-adjust.)

thanks,

Judy

I have to apologize for this post and to thank all of you who have responded assuming I was having problems with the move tool.   My problem was that I had stopped and forgotten to restart an external file called "XMouse2000" which imitates in Windows the behavior of XWindows in Unix which I used to work in.   This program makes the window (or layer in PS) active without raising it, but whatever your cursor is over becomes what you're editing.   I didn't realize it was that program that was controlling the PS behavior that had changed and thought it was an update of Photoshop Beta which I've been using.   Again, thank you so much to those who spent time answering and sorry.

Good to read that it’s sorted.

I think the photoshop term is auto- select.   When your cursor is over a layer it pops to the top and becomes the one you're editing on.

Please post the requested screenshot with the Move Tool (the four arrow-icon) selected.

My question is not related to the auto-raise with the move tool (works perfectly).

It's a layer 'thing'.   With auto-raise (or auto select), it you move the cursor ove a layer it comes to the top and is the active layer ie changes will happen on that layer automatically.   More 'normal' is you have to click somewhere on the layer to make it active ie the one you're working on.   I want to go back to auto-raise;  I did nothing to change it.   Thanks for looking at it.

Hi Judy.  My guess is that you might be talking about Auto-Select.

I think most experienced users find Auto-Select annoying, and prefer to work with it turned off, and instead, Ctrl clickan area in the document window to select the relevant layer.

Is that what you were referring to?  If not, a screen shot would be helpful, as Stephen suggested.

Yes, auto-raise  (it's called auto select in the computer community).   And yes, I found it very annoying at first.   But I've gotten used to it over the years, and then suddenly, recently it stopped.   And I don't get the same options that you show ie no auto-select option.   I'm using Photoshop (Beta).

Please post a meaningful screenshot in which the Move Tool is selected.

@judy04

I think something got lost in the translation. What is "auto-raise"?
