Question

Weird lines appear after doing Filter-Other-Minimum

Photoshop 23.3.2; Windows 10

Hi,

I'm trying to do star reduction on my milky way raw file (Nikon D850, Rokinon 14mm).

Following several youtube videos as a guidance. The stars are reduced, but some weird line pattern appear spreading out from the image center. Please see screenshot. The exported PNG also shows the weird lines.

All I did was:

Select - Color range. Highlights, Fuzziness = 60, range = 100

Select - Modify - Expand. Expand by =3

Select - Modify - Feather. Feather radius = 1.5

Filter - Other - Minimum. Radius = 0.8. Preserve Roundness

I have played with different values, with the same results.

No other sliders had been moved prior to the above.

Thank you,

Azman

Thank you @begm98597102 for sharing the link and info.  We tested again here on both Mac and Win and do not see this issue following the steps in the first video link you sent.

At this point our suggestion would be to do a clean install of Ps and make sure your preferences are also replaced. There is something going on with your system that we are not able to reproduce here.

One thing to try before that:

Close Photoshop
Restart the computer
Use the Adobe Creative Cloud App to uninstall Photoshop
Restart the computer
Install Photoshop via the Creative Cloud App without launching any other programs.
Restart the computer
LaunchPhotoshop
Wait 5 minutes... does the error persist?

Restore your preferences using this manual method:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

Does it work correctly?

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back.

Thank you for your patience,

Hi,

Sorry I had to put this issue on hold since I didn't want to reinstall Photoshop.

I now have a new Macbook. Reprocessing the same raw file on this Macbook (fresh install of everything), I don't see the weird lines as in the previous computer.

We can close this issue.

Thank you,

Azman

Another note:

>Filter - Other - Minimum. Radius = 0.8. Preserve Roundness

The lines will show stronger when Radius is higher.

Thank you for the file @begm98597102. testing here on both Mac and Win do not show any lines/issues.

Do you have another machine to do the same steps on to see if the issue persists, that would help us tell if it is machine based vs software. Could you share the YouTube video you are using as your tutuorial so we can test the same steps they show to see if we are missing something in the workflow?

Thank you,

Can you post a link to a raw raw file. It is possible that you are seeing some sensor noise that is being emphasised through your process.

Hi Cory,

yes happened to all my milky way shots that I try to precess this way (some show strong lines, some more subtle lines, but forming the same pattern).  I can send you my raw files if you need to examine it.

Going back to my first post up,  I see the lines become stronger as I set higher value for Radius.

>Select - Color range. Highlights, Fuzziness = 60, range = 100

>Select - Modify - Expand. Expand by =3

>Select - Modify - Feather. Feather radius = 1.5

>Filter - Other - Minimum. Radius = 0.8. Preserve Roundness
