Question

What happened to closing a file and having it save changes?

Whenever I work on a file in PS and close it, it asks what format, where, etc. This is extremely frustrating. I switched on the Legacy Save but it still won't just close out a .jpg file, overwriting the old one with the new one in the same location.

Every time it asks me what format, and I have to click on Save a Copy... to select JPEG, click Save, click Replace, select JPEG options, click OK.

That's 6 mouse clicks just to close a friggin file that I needed to do a minor change to. I have over 20 at a time that I need to do this to and the old way was to open the file, modify it, close the file, click replace, and you are done.

Am I missing something here???

Do these files have only a background layer and nothing else?

And I see that you have numerous drives in your screenshots. Where are you saving these problem files to?

I was mistaken, the Document Bar does not actually definitely indicate that the image is flat (it simply could be that all Layers are deselected).

So, @Herbiedriver1 , please post meaningful screenshots.

That mean that they should show all relevant Panel and just to make sure please also include the History Panel.

Have you considered automating this process with a script or action? There are numerous ways to make this faster and easier.

This happens because you're adding properties to the file that aren't supported in the jpeg specification, so it has to be a new copy. C. Pfaffenbichler lists the most common causes.

I only added cropping with »Delete Cropped Pixels« unchecked in an edit to the first post; that seems to be a somewhat frequent way people create a Layer instead of the Background Layer without necessarily noticing.

Were the JPG files previously saved by Photoshop or another program?

Happens to every jpg, regardless of Photoshop or other.

As an aside: Resaving jpgs is a bad idea as the lossy compression is cumulative.

Am I missing something here???

Almost certainly.

Please provide meaningful information, so at the very least screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible.

What exactly did you do to the jpg? Add Layers, Channels, …?

Edit: Cropping with the Crop Tool with »Delete Cropped Pixels« unchecked seems to be a »popular« reason for posts like yours.

Thanks for the response. To start with I am very familiar with the lossy characteristics of JPG files, so let's not go there. I am supplied photos from outside sources, 100% of the time they are crappy phone photos which are always jpg files, so I have to do a fair amount of color correct, cleanup, crop, etc. So with that out of the way, here is the workflow:

1. Open JPG file, correct image, crop, etc.

2. Command W (Mac, Close file) which immediately brings up this window:

Save As...

3: then, I have to go through the whole mess of:

Save a Copy...

So it's just a long mess, when all I need is to close a file, hit Yes I know I am replacing the original. Close.

Did anyone claim that jpg supports 16bit?
