When applying a gradient fill, Photoshop doesn't show the result til I change the tool back to the arrow tool.

Shouldn't it just show the result right away?

Hey, @wagiswagis. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll help you figure this out.

Try using the Gradient Tool (G) to create a Gradient Layer & adjust it with the on-canvas control to see the changes live. You can use the Properties panel to adjust the gradients further.
