I am using Adobe Photoshop updated version, when I use the remove tool I am getting an error message that is "could not complete your request because of a program error" and can't use the tool because activation failed. Can you help me fix this?

Hi @atedevries,

Thank you for the update, in addition to the Intel GPU–related workaround already shared earlier in the thread.

If you haven't updated yet, please install the latest Photoshop 27. x release from the Creative Cloud desktop app.

Once you've updated them, relaunch Photoshop and test the Remove tool again. If the issue persists, please provide your full system information, as shown in Help > System Info, so that we can review it further.

Best,

For those that are seeing this issue, if you have an Intel GPU, can you share its name (see * below)?

Anyone seeing this who does not have an Intel GPU?

Temporary workaround:

  • Open Photoshop
  • Go to Edit->Preferences->Image Processing
  • Find "Remove Tool Processing" option, change value to "More Stable"
  • Click OK
  • Close and restart Photoshop
  • This should avoid the error by forcing the use of the CPU instead of GPU. When the issue is fixed in a later Ps update, you will want to reset this option to "Faster" for best performance.

Thanks!

* (Per AI) The easiest way to find the GPU name on Windows 11 is:

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Display adapters section.
  3. The name of your GPU will be listed there (e.g., Intel (R) Arc(TM) Graphics).

Hi @Karen30534490ovyq , thank you for responding - that is one of the GPUs on which we observed the issue, and I believe Adobe will be addressing the issue in a future update.

Did the above workaround help?

You could trying signing out of Photoshop, quitting Photoshop, restarting it, and then signing back in.

I came here because I'm having the same issue, I tried this suggestion and it didn't work. Do you have any other suggestions?

You could try resetting the Remove tool. To reset it, right-click on it's icon in the Options bar (if the Options bar isn't showing at the top go to Window > Options). When you right-click on it , select Reset Tool.

If that doesn't work, try restarting Photoshop and/or restarting your computer and then restarting Photoshop.

And then if it's still not working, try resetting Photoshop's preferences:
