I ran into this same confusion when I first started using adjustment layers, so I get why it feels odd. The key for me was realizing that copying the pumpkins to their own layer does not stop an adjustment layer above them from affecting everything below it. I now make sure the adjustment layer sits directly above the pumpkin layer and clip it to that layer, so it only changes the pumpkins. That also explains why your selection-only version worked, since the selection acted like a mask for the adjustment.

That usually happens with an adjustment layer, since it affects everything below it by default. Try clipping it to just the layer you want by Alt-clicking the line between the two layers, so the adjustment only applies to that one layer.

    What kind of adjustments?

If you mean using an adjustment layer, it will affect everything below it in the layer stack unless you clip it to the specific layer you want to adjust. To do that Alt+Click on the border between the adjustment layer and the layer you want to adjust (in the layers panel) and a small downward arrow will appear meaning the adjustment is clipped to the layer directly below it.

If you mean something else, please give further info and a screenshot to explain the problem.

Thanks Dave. I’ll try and explain a little clearer.
I open a picture of 3 pumpkins on our front porch. I “select” Subject, copy and paste the 3 pumpkins to a new layer. When I try and adjust the new layer it also affects the original layer.

Wow! Now I just tried Select the pumpkins and adjusted without creating a new layer. Only the pumpkins were adjusted!

Why would I not be able to Select, Copy and paste to a new layer and Adjust without it affecting the original layer?

As a result of me hopefully solving the issue I don’t want to take any more of your time so please, don’t feel obligated to reply but any insight would be welcome.

     Best,

    Bill

You still have not said how you try to adjust that layer, but if you are using an adjustment layer, the re-read what Dave initially answered. He already explained that adjustments layers affect all layers below them, unless you ‘clip’ the adjustment layer to the layer you want to adjust.

If you add an adjustment layer when you have an active selection, then that selection becomes a mask for the adjustment layer and so it only affects what you selected. That explains why selecting the object and not copying it to a new layer works as intended.
