Question

where is soft noise addition control ?

Hi, adding in noise to get a comocolour line to be matching original, all nosie options are far too crystaline and bitty.

see storyboard attached. Just where does one apply the softness of the noise ?

I had to remove a yellow card, then draw in a grey line for the now part removed aerial wire, it needs noise to match the original, I try all noise options, it needs mild coloured noise, but all are far too false, compared to the original.

I have never ever got on with the add noise, far too crude,  yet adding solid colour to an image needs noise adding, now with Pshop 2025 I thought there would be better noise, but its no different than 30 yrs ago, yet its a fundamental need. Noise is never as 'bitty' and pixel defined as the noise tool gives.

Cannot blur the image as the line would get destroyed. Add noise needs a noise softness slider, where is it ?

I normally use about 1% luminance gaussian, then 0.5-1 % chroma gaussian - but with gaussian blur about radius 0.15-0.3 after each. Obviously, actual values will vary with resolution and noise level of the original.

That usually matches sensor noise pretty well. Not perfect, it still has a slightly "papery" texture, but good enough for most practical purposes. I also tried Grain in the ACR filter, but that looks distinctly synthetic. This is zoomed to 200%:

I don't do this often enough that I feel I need a dedicated setting for this. I'm OK with knowing it can be done when I need it.

Hi, taking these in order, I run the action, but the entire image not just the aerial wire gets noise, and at one pojnt ensure the xxxxx is so, thats lost me.

I take the camera grain image and make tiled larger, edit create pattern, overlay etc but the entire image gets affacted.

I try for luminance grain buit dont see it in Pshop, where my aerial wire is.

Floundering

And never used Smart objects, so a step by step is needed here, whatever I use.

Oh why cant that ancient grain filter have a softnes slider to it. This is oh too complex.

Yes, that is how the action was designed. If you need localised noise, use the layer mask.

You have lost me as well.

You are right, nothing has changed. The Camera Raw filter has grain which you might look into. I originally created the following action before smart objects, so by converting the raster smart noise layer to a smart object might be something to additionally explore:

Anyway, the idea is that once noise has been added, you could scale, blur, sharpen or otherwise filter the layer.

The ACR grain was my go to method of adding skin texture to illustrations for many years, but I am pretty sure they changed it. The controls definitely changed, and I don't think it works the same way as it used to.

If you have a sample texture that you can adjust to close to 50% grey, you can define it as a pattern which you can apply to a higher layer and set it to Overlay or Soft Light, and adjust opacity to suit.
