Question

Which exact pixel of the Magic Wand Tool is sensitive?

I’m trying to select small areas and I feel like I don’t really know which part of the magic wand tool is the action bit.

It has a rounded tip, so I’m guessing it would be the tip of the tip.  I have to estimate where that is visually.. it’s a bit harder on a rounded tip compared to an arrow.  But then, is it the black line of the tool?  Or is it the tip of the white outline around the black tool?  Or would it be one pixel just OUTSIDE of the white outline?

But there’s also three stars floating around it.  By doing some testing, I’m fairly certain that the stars aren’t the sensitive part of the tool.  It seems to be closer to the wand portion.

It would be great if this tool had a more intuitive, less ambiguous design.  Which exact pixel is the action bit?

If you go to Preferences > Cursors, and set it to “precise”, you get a crosshairs cursor:

And then you can try different sample sizes in the options bar.

The default for Threshold in the options bar is 32. Try setting the number to 1 and zoom in enough to see the pixel grid and click. Try other numbers to increase the threshold. For a small area, you might set the tolerance to 5 or 10 for instance. Use Shift to add to a selection and Option/Alt to subtract.

I think you have to zoom to at least 600% to see the pixel grid.

The answer to your question is that the way the Magic Wand works depends on what options you have chosen in the options bar.
