Question

Why can't I have Adobe Photoshop desktop version running on your android phone

My laptop is not fully compatible to run Adobe Photoshop. My laptop is already 9yrs old, It sort of runs the software, but when I upgrade the software, it’s no longer, compatible. I don’t have any other devices besides my Samsung android phone, it cost money to buy a new laptop, but I have XP-Pen to connection to my android phone, and it has an app to run the device. Adobe has Photoshop with AI assistant for Android, but it’s not the same as the desktop version

I think the main limitation here is not simply the processing power of the phone. Photoshop desktop is built for Windows and macOS, while Android uses a completely different operating system and software environment.

Even if a Samsung phone has enough RAM and processing power, the desktop version cannot simply be installed on Android like a normal app. Adobe would have to create a full Android version of the desktop application, including its interface, plugins, file handling and hardware support.

Since you already have an XP Pen that works with your Android phone, I can understand why you would want the full Photoshop experience on it. In the meantime, Photoshop on the web or an Android application such as Krita may be more practical than replacing the laptop immediately.

If your main problem is that your nine year old laptop cannot run newer Photoshop versions, I would also check whether an older compatible Photoshop version still meets your needs before spending money on new hardware.

‘...I would also check whether an older compatible Photoshop version still meets your needs...’

Adobe now make only the current and immediately previous major versions available for download.

Thanks for the clarification, Dave. That is useful to know. In that case, my suggestion about using an older compatible version is not really practical if Adobe only provides the current and previous major version for download. I appreciate the correction.

Photoshop is not your only option. Apps like Krita will work on an Android device.  Krita is free and very capable.

I have not used Clip Studio Paint, but I have read good things about it.

I’m sure there will be others if you search.  A big advantage with this approach is that those apps will work much better on an older device than Photoshop because of its size and complexity.  Photoshop is using close to 12Gb on my system.  Krita is using just 530Mb.

This is what Google AI says about it:

@nintendo_2519 I used to have this issue as well, as my MacBook Pro could only run up to Photoshop 2024 on my device. We are now up at 2026; There were some new features I wanted to use, and there was absolutely now way, until I found that I could use Photoshop on the Web. Game changer! Here is a video that I created for YouTube,

Android is neither Windows OS nor Mac OS.

Expecting software like Photoshop proper to run on a mobile phone seems overly optimistic to me.

How does your mobile phone measure up against »Photoshop on desktop’s» requirements (GPU, RAM, disc space, …)?
